Outdoor Holiday Decor for LA Winter

California Winter Holiday Outdoor Decor Curb Appeal

what is winter?

In California, we have a wide variety of architecture and styles, which can make it difficult to decorate your place if you’re not sure where to start. There are plenty of neighborhoods where your neighbors’ houses definitely don’t look like your own, so what are you to do? I’ve got great news - whether you want to play it safe or get funky, there’s a look for that! From muted and traditional to a multicolored cactus, have we got ideas for you, friend. Read on if you’re not quite sure what to do with your outside space this holiday.

let’s get flocked

For starters, maybe you’re lucky enough to have a tree or two out front. While they might not be Douglas Firs, there’s no reason you can’t dress them up like they are! Look for ornaments that are specifically for the outdoors to protect your good ones from any inclement weather. Throw on some outdoor lights and you’ve got yourself some outside festivus.

Speaking of outdoor trees (or hey, big bushes or shrubs), why not bring a little white winter your way? There’s no rule that says just because we live in Southern California, doesn’t mean we can have a bit of snow! Use a flocking spray to dust up whatever greenery in your yard that would amp up the holiday cheer. You can also use it on windows and make it look like snow has gathered on your sills.

But maybe traditional isn’t your thing. Have you considered going zesty and bold with bright colors and some atypical greens? If your place doesn’t lean towards the classics, play up its assets. Use palm fronds instead of tree trimmings for your wreath if your space is contemporary or totally mid century. Does your house get good light? Try arranging some succulents in some merry planters or in the shape of a traditional Christmas tree. These ideas make for cute little homages to the classics without being heavy-handed.

sushine, citrus, and cactus

There’s nothing more quintessential California than sunshine, citrus, and a ton of cactus everywhere. So play up our strong suit! Decorate outdoors with dried citrus ornaments and garlands and invite the sunny rays to stay through the end of the year. If you have a cactus or two, spin them round with festive lights and suddenly they’ll feel a lot less prickly.

As you’ve hopefully gathered by now, there are ways a plenty to make your outdoor space sing this holiday season while remaining the most you it can be. Don’t cave to tradition if that’s not your thing! Have fun and get creative.
