Traditional Winter Holiday Decor
winter tidings!
Nothing ushers in Christmas cheer faster than some good old fashioned traditional decorations. But that doesn’t mean they have to be stuffy and boring and smell like your Great Aunt Gertrude’s house. Traditional holiday decorations are still around for a reason - they harken to the days of yore and elicit a great deal of nostalgia, which can be lovely this time of year. The festive season is upon us, so get ready to break out the greatest hits!
a holly, jolly christmas
Let’s start with ornaments. If you’re in possession of some family heirlooms, you’re already off to a great start. If not, you can always be on the hunt for good vintage finds (pro tip: look in the off-season when there will be less competition and prices will be lower). There’s something about passed-down pieces that makes the nostalgia work on overdrive.
Next, make sure you have a place to hang stockings! It’s okay if you don’t have a fireplace - find a wall and make a display of it. Look for plaid or needlepoint options. Better yet if they’re in red and green.

Stairs need attention, too! Create a show stopping display with some trimmings you picked up at Trader Joe’s and a bit of ribbon to match your color scheme. Douglas Fir, Pine, Magnolia, and Eucalyptus all ring true. But if you’re not into the real thing, invest in a good faux garland, maybe even one that’s pre-lit if there’s an outlet nearby or it’s a battery operated LED situation. Keep things neutral, but a pop of gold or silver now and again certainly wouldn’t hurt!

There are plenty of details to complete the picture - throw in some seasonal throw pillows, create a classic tablescape on your dining table (maybe even steal a few ideas from your Thanksgiving set up!), string up plenty of white twinkle lights, and get crafty with some pomanders. Before you know it, your house will look just like a Dickens’ novel (sans all the melancholy, hopefully).
