A Fresh Start: New Year, New Home

get a head start on spring cleaning

Welcome in the new year by showcasing your best self to your harshest critic - you! Whether you’re celebrating the Gregorian New Year or Lunar New Year, there are changes you can make to usher in the decade (!!) with a bang.

Our homes reflect and absorb so much of the energy we give it - make sure the place you come back to every evening and wake up to every morning best reflects the feelings and emotions you want it to. Clear up that pile of laundry on the floor. Unpack those boxes from your move… a year ago. Wipe down your mirrors so your reflection shines. This year is going to be a turbulent one, make sure you’re ready to kick its ass!

1. clean and organize

You can’t start off on the right foot if your home is a mess. That’s not how this work, silly. Give everything a good wipe down. If you can, hire some help to really get things squeaky clean. Then organize everything that’s hanging about. Fold your clothes, places oddities in baskets, you know the drill. Marie Kondo that shit. A well organized closet is also a great way to not have to cry to Lucy to figure out where your white, collarless shirt from Fred Segal is.

An organized closet is the best way to start your day! And relieve stress when you’re looking for your white collarless shirt from Fred Segal.
Everybody, I mean EVERYBODY, loves a well stocked and organized fridge. I just makes you happier and that’s science.

2. paint something

It’s amazing what a difference color makes. Even if you switch it up with another neutral for a little pop (think white walls and light grey doors). And don’t stay inside the box, you can paint anything, friend. Literally anything. Just paint one thing something new. As long as it matches your look, that is. Don’t go painting some bistro chairs neon green if the rest of your decor is soft pastels. You don’t need that kind of stress in your life, baby.

A lovely painted grey door is a subtle and neutral way to add visual interest to a calm space.

3. Switch out your furniture and art

Maybe you’re like me and have two storage units filled to the brim with furniture and art you can change out when you’re bored with whatever is currently in your home (what, that’s not everybody?!). Or maybe you need to go on a Target run. Either way, welcome in a new addition to your space and create some new energy. Doesn’t need to be anything major, maybe it’s just an accent chair, but I certainly won’t stop you from searching for a new couch.

The Shore Bench from Serena & Lily is perfect in an entryway or mudroom or perfectly sweet under a picture window.
Let’s talk about how Anthropologie is simply killing it with their new House and Home collection.

4. new bedding

Don’t new, clean sheets feel wonderful? Give yourself the luxury of some fresh bedding and future you will be very comfy and cozy. Or maybe you’ve been thinking about investing in a eco-friendly comforter. Or ergonomic pillows. Or maybe there’s a fancy mattress topper that’s been on your mind. Whatever makes you comfortable as you drift off into dreamland. Go to bed and wake up feeling like you can take on anything. You deserve it!

5. a rose by any other name

Too many studies to count list the impact of fragrance on the human brain. Do your noggin a solid and light up some candles or incense. What kind of mood do you want to achieve? Citrus is always cheerful, earthy tones are mellow, lavender will curb anxiety and help you fall asleep. Maybe you haven’t used on of your favorites in a while or you’re ready to try something new. Whatever the case is: Light. It. Up.

Candles can go everywhere (even outside). Welcome guests into your home with some fresh flowers and a beautiful fragrance.
Candles don’r have to be fancy to be displayed! This little guy looks luxurious in that amber glass.
