Decorating With Pumpkins

bippity boppity boo

From the first day of October up until Thanksgiving, decorating with pumpkins is the best way to go! Nothing says seasonal living like a house filled to the brim with gourds throughout the best days of fall. While it’s a great tradition to bedeck your front door with pumpkins up the wazoo, there are other ways to get the look, as well. For starters, you could try and fill bowls and trays with mini pumpkins, especially if they’re color coordinated (read: all white or the striped kind). If you’re interested in more ideas on how to get creative with pumpkins in the best season, keep reading!

oh my gourd

If you like to entertain, maybe a pumpkin and squash table centerpiece is your thing. Use the colors of your space as a starting point, then pick pumpkins that work with what you’ve got. Above, you can see that all green gourds with some added cabbage and vines makes for a lovely little vignette on an already verdant table. Add some tea lights for a lighting and you’re good to go.

Speaking of tea lights - why not turn your mini pumpkins into candle holders? I mean, seriously, why not? It’s totally fun and unexpected and will definitely get your guests talking. This works best if you have a drill bit to evenly carve out a niche for your candles, but if not, good old fashioned hand carving will do. Whittle out just enough room for the candle itself and voilà, you’ve got yourself some pumpkin votives. Wild, no?

A supper easy option for those with wood burning or broken fireplaces (it me!), is to stuff the living daylights out of that bad boy with as many pumpkins as you can fit. It’s quirky and fun and most certainly brings the autumnal vibes indoors. Adding in different sizes and colors adds to the variety and brings in some dimension, too.

The great pumpkin

Of course, there’s really no end to how you can decorate with pumpkins. The limits are only the space you have and your imagination. Also, make sure to preserve your pumpkins so that they last all season long! Nobody likes sad, saggy gourds. Nobody. (And if you do, that’s a weird ass fetish, friend.) Simply mix a solution of one gallon of water, 2 TB bleach, and a few squirts of dish soap in your sink or a bucket (or use this ratio in your tub if you’re going all out with a Costco-sized load), let those gourditos soak for 20-30 minutes, then rinse them off and let them dry completely before placing them out in the world. Boom. You’ll have fresh faced pumpkins all season long.
