1. Butterflies & bats

Stick them, string them, whatever you please - is you abode infested with these flying creatures? Bats are a classic go-to for Halloween decorating, but what about butterflies? There’s something dramatic and unexpected about them. And if you’re one of those creative types, why not add some flapping wings noises to your trick-or-treaters’ soundtrack? I mean, who isn’t totally creeped out when something small flies right by your ear unannounced? That’s not just me - right?

Gorgeous jack-o-lanterns made from gourds and squashes

2. Whimsical Jack-o-lanterns

Aren’t these guys fun? Carving up heirloom varieties, like the Fairy Tale kind or ghostly white versions, have been gaining in popularity these past couple of years which is a look I’m totally into. They’re fun, they’re festive, they get you in the spooky mood while being whimsical. The unanticipated squash can also make a cameo on your front porch, adding to the festivities. Pro tip: use a drill to get those perfect polka dots and try using linocut carving tools to get those fancy etchings.

3. Slithery Slytherins

Sliding into spot numero tres are snakes! Always a safe bet for Halloween decorations, there’s no reason you can’t elevate them beyond the normal fare. Whether they’re decorations on a tablescape or wrapping their way around a lamp base, snakes are very in these days. Thanks, Gucci! An easy way to add some slippery serpents into your decor is to buy some of the rubber toys and paint them - black, a true standard, or go glamorous in gold. Try these ones.

scary creepy cheese cloth and styrofoam head ghosts

4. Ghastly Ghosts

There are so many options with ghosts! You can easily go with creepy (hellllooo cheesecloth and packing tape!) or cute (tassels!). People have been getting extra creative in this category lately. Personally, I’m a big fan of the wispier options when paired with some extra poltergeist-y lighting once the sun sets. And if you add in a fog machine? Well then, consider me creeped out. But honestly, whatever floats your boat will work, you've got some real winners in these ideas.
