Well, it’s happened. The temps have finally dropped now in Southern California. One might even call it brisk. One might even need a puffer jacket. And, yes, it is perfectly respectable to require a puffer jacket in 60 degree weather (don’t at me). I mean, what temperature does it really have to be before we get snow, because I’m pretty sure it could snow any minute. California outdoor living, however, doesn’t stop when the temps dip below 70 - the party must go on! Here are some enjoyable ideas on how to entertain outside, whether it’s on a tiny apartment balcony or a great big patio, this LA winter season. Stay cozy my friends, I think it’s a low of 55 tonight!
Ice ice baby
Burr it’s cold out here. There must be some humidity in the atmosphere. No? Well, oh well. The first pro tip of a great outdoor winter hosting sesh is to provide some heat (and I’m not talking about your all around hotness, you cutie pie you). I’m talking fire pits or heaters. There’s a wide variety of these bad boys on the market, so you’re sure to find one in your budget that meets your needs and aesthetic. Whether you can supply a gas line or want the simplicity of some good old fashioned burning hunk of logs, you’ve got options.

Cozy seating is a necessity to outdoor entertaining, especially in the winter. Hardly anyone is ever properly dressed for the great outdoors here and partying alfresco in the “colder” months is bound to make more than one guest freeze their tushie off. You can easily combat this woe with plush and enveloping pillows and throws. Guests can wrap themselves up for a snuggle sesh while chatting over a mulled concoction.
Light it up
Last but not least, did you remember to add some outdoor lighting to your space? Because once daylight savings happens, we basically live in Alaska until spring. Depending on the vibe you’re going for, you can either sprinkle a mix of tea lights and hurricane candles or string up some cafe lights. You can even do both! If you have the opportunity, make sure to install some bright (but not too bright because ambiance, duh) outdoor wired lighting, be it sconces or ceiling lights or whatever your space needs. You don’t want folks tripping over their own feet.
